This is a hot topic and often a misunderstood one. The basic premise is that you cannot have more people living in any type of housing for more than it was intended. To help curb some of the infractions, each town has incorporated its own set of rules and regulations. Below is a brief outline of a few towns but please see the official town web site for further clarification.

Bridgeport

Only 4 unrelated occupants regardless of square footage.

In any room where someone is going to sleep (such as a bedroom and not the couch in a livingroom) there must be at least 70 square feet of floor area. If that bedroom is going to be shared with another person. You must add an additional 50 square feet for each person. As an example, if two people want to share one bedroom then that room must be at least 120 square feet or roughly 10' x 12'.

No cellars or basements may be used for sleeping.

Fairfield

Similar to Bridgeport, in any room where someone is going to sleep (such as a bedroom and not the couch in a livingroom) there must be at least 70 square feet of floor area. If that bedroom is going to be shared with another person. You must add an additional 50 square feet for each person. In the beach area, a maximum of 4 occupants are allowed in a residence regardless of square footage.
The rest of Fairfield is limited to 5 occupants.

Trumbull

Only 3 unrelated occupants regardless of square footage. Obviously this has no bearing on a family but for students, you can only have 3 occupants unless someone else is related.
